Factorio es un juego de simulación inmersiva en el que los jugadores asumen el papel de un ingeniero varado en un planeta alienígena. El objetivo final es construir y optimizar un complejo fabril totalmente automatizado capaz de producir tecnologías cada vez más avanzadas. Los jugadores deben extraer recursos, investigar tecnologías, construir infraestructuras y defenderse de la fauna autóctona. A medida que la fábrica se expande, los jugadores deben gestionar la logística, la eficiencia y la contaminación, equilibrando la producción de recursos con el impacto medioambiental y las necesidades de defensa.

La jugabilidad de Factorio gira en torno a la recolección de recursos, la fabricación de máquinas y piezas, y el diseño de líneas de producción y cadenas de suministro eficientes. Los jugadores deben pensar estratégicamente para optimizar el flujo de recursos y la eficiencia de la producción, al tiempo que se enfrentan a limitaciones espaciales y desafíos medioambientales. El juego cuenta con un sólido árbol tecnológico con numerosas mejoras y tecnologías que desbloquear, lo que permite una gran personalización y variedad en el diseño de las fábricas. El modo multijugador añade otra capa de complejidad y diversión, permitiendo a los jugadores colaborar o competir en la construcción de los complejos industriales más eficientes.
El juego cuenta con una vista isométrica de arriba abajo que ofrece una perspectiva clara de las extensas fábricas que los jugadores construirán. El diseño de sonido es envolvente, con los ruidos mecánicos de la fábrica que se suman a la atmósfera y la banda sonora ambiental que mejora sutilmente la experiencia de juego sin ser intrusiva.
