Factorio é um jogo de simulação imersivo em que os jogadores assumem o papel de um engenheiro preso num planeta alienígena. O objetivo final é construir e otimizar um complexo fabril totalmente automatizado capaz de produzir tecnologias cada vez mais avançadas. Os jogadores têm de extrair recursos, investigar tecnologias, construir infra-estruturas e defender-se da fauna nativa. À medida que a fábrica se expande, os jogadores têm de gerir a logística, a eficiência e a poluição, equilibrando a produção de recursos com o impacto ambiental e as necessidades de defesa.

A jogabilidade de Factorio gira em torno da recolha de recursos, da criação de máquinas e peças e da conceção de linhas de produção e cadeias de abastecimento eficientes. Os jogadores têm de pensar estrategicamente para otimizar o fluxo de recursos e a eficiência da produção, ao mesmo tempo que lidam com restrições espaciais e desafios ambientais. O jogo apresenta uma árvore tecnológica robusta com inúmeras actualizações e tecnologias para desbloquear, permitindo uma personalização e variedade significativas no design da fábrica. O modo multijogador acrescenta outra camada de complexidade e diversão, permitindo aos jogadores colaborar ou competir na construção dos complexos industriais mais eficientes.
O jogo apresenta uma vista isométrica de cima para baixo que oferece uma perspetiva clara das fábricas em expansão que os jogadores irão construir. Os gráficos são detalhados e funcionais, com destaque para a diferenciação entre as várias máquinas, recursos e tecnologias. O design de som é envolvente, com os ruídos mecânicos da fábrica a contribuírem para a atmosfera e a banda sonora ambiente a melhorar subtilmente a experiência de jogo sem ser intrusiva.
